Cool Mint Oreos vs. Thin Mints

I never thought I'd say this, but I tried both Cool Mint Oreos and Thin Mints this weekend, and I prefer the Oreos. Must be the lard.

Jeff Winger's new hair style

What in Hades is going on with Jeff Winger's new man-bangs on Community?  While they may cover up his receding hairline, he is a middle-aged, disbarred lawyer attending a community college.  The receding hairline worked for his character.

Jeff's new bangs, especially when paired with a black leather jacket, are unsettling. (Pic The Faster TimesIf the bangs stick around, I hope at least some good jokes come out of them at the study table.

Guys wearing glasses

One of my new favorite blogs is Guys With Glasses which could also be called 'Attractive Young Men in Vintage Specs'.  This means you won't find befuddled Milton from Office Space on there. If I had such a blog I'd include:

Marvin Gaye

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones

James Franco as Allen Ginsberg

Heath Kirchart (Pic by Eric Rowley)

Mos Def

Evan Adams as Thomas Builds a Fire

Young Bruce Lee (swoon!) Source

Straight outta Iowa

Imagine the wittiest artists you know.  Imagine them in Iowa...making t-shirts and posters.  Now imagine they have business sense.  Boom, there you have Raygun, the greatest store in the universe.  Their Hearthland t-shirt makes me smile.

Big eyebrows, tousled hair

Yoo Seung-Ho is a seventeen year-old television and movie actor from Korea.  He first gained fame playing a feisty grandson opposite a mute, rural grandmother in the 2002 film The Way Home.  Yoo's lanky frame, tousled hair and big eyebrows remind me of Canadian actor Jay Baruchel.  Yoo's image is more dandy than geeky, however.

Another look at Seung-Ho and Jay:

Guess who scored Japan's winning goal?

My yakuza boyfriend and the Samurai Blue beat out Australia to win the Asia Cup last month!  The big story is how Tadanari Lee, a Japanese national of Korean descent, scored the winning goal in Japan's final game.  Korea's Chosun Ilbo ran a feature on Lee, who faced discrimination not just in Japan, but also Korea.

Heck yeah, I'd live here

Does an incredibly renovated home, for under $600K, make up for a scary-ass hilly lot? This two bedroom, 1.75 bathroom home located in the "latest hipster's paradise Echo Park" (the realtor's words) puts this question to the test.  The house, built in 1905, boasts one parking spot which for the neighborhood ain't so bad. Let's break it down:

THE GOOD
  • Asking price of $535,000
  • Central AC and heating (Amen, because Los Angeles gets HOT!)
  • Indoor laundry (Woohoo! Who likes the laundromat or doing loads in their garage?)
  • Beautiful hardwood floors (I looove the dark stain.)
  • A redonkulous kitchen makeover (Clean cabinets, solid surface countertops and new appliances)
  • All appliances come with the house!!!

  • Rainforest showerheads and nice tile

  • Classy doors
  • Recessed lighting

The final great thing about this house:
  • The treetop deck

THE BAD
  • The enormous, fugly slab of concrete holding up the front of the house

  • The long walk from the street up to the house ("Oops! Left my phone inside. Whoops! Left my reusable shopping bags inside. Damn! I left the kitchen light on. Ugh! These grocery bags are killing my arms!")
The final bad thing about this home:
  • The steep, exposed hillside mere feet from the house's exterior wall

THE VERDICT
Ajumma decided the nice finishes, the view and asking price outweigh the as ugly as it comes, probably would make me shed a tear every time I pull up to the curb-slab of concrete in front of this house.  The rocky hillside is a bigger issue, though the owner could argue the home has been standing since 1905.  As you enjoy lunch on your tree top deck, fresh from your rainforest shower, while your laundry chugs away in your washer, you will likely forget about the hillside bearing down on your property, anyway.

A final word, if you buy this ultra-sweet Echo Park house, I recommend purchasing a delivery contract from Sparkletts, because there's no way you want to be hauling 5-gallon water jugs up those stairs.

"Eternal Flame" on Outsourced

Eternal Flame (by The Bangles) was played over and over in my house after hearing it performed on Outsourced.  I've raved about the colorful set design on the series.  Another catchy, yet subtle facet of Outsourced is the music. It's the only show where you'll hear Last Train to Clarksville and Is She Really Going Out With Him? performed on a sitar.
