A Love Letter to L.A.

The Rock describes his new film, "Southland Tales," as a love letter to the city of Los Angeles, or a bitch-slap, whichever you prefer. The movie takes place in L.A. on the 4th of July, 2008. The city is on the brink of political and enviromental collapse (just another day in Southern California, if you ask me) in this science fiction-drama-comedy that weaves together multiple characters in vignettes. The Rock plays an entertainer with amnesia, Sarah Michelle Geller a porn star, and Seann William Scott a Hermosa Beach cop with clues to bring down the apocolytic conspiracy. "Southland Tales" debuted in 2006 at Cannes to rotten reviews, but was re-edited. New reviews describe the film as incoherent, but as we all know, for every incoherent film there is an audience who will hail it as a classic.
