Relic of the 1980's

Got 1980's Star Wars glasses? How about ones promoting The Muppet Movie, courtesy of (evil) Burger King and McDonald's?

If they showed everybody, you'd have to die

A few years ago SPIN magazine named Coldplay as Band of the Year, but only Mr. Gwyneth Paltrow appeared on the cover. Ajumma emailed the editor complaining about this fact. The editor retorted that members of Coldplay obviously want Chris Martin to be their "face," since he's the main focus of their videos and does all their interviews, etc. I think this is B.S. and was reminded of it recently while watching a video for The All-American Rejects. Take a look at the other members of these bands, folks. They may not have as pretty eyes as their frontmen, but they're equally as important even if SPIN doesn't think so.

Ferret factoids

Did you know that male ferrets are called "hobs?" Female ferrets are "jills," and a group of ferrets are called "a business." Don't get all up in their business! This is the exciting stuff I learned after sitting in the same vet office three times in a week.

You are what you eat

If you see only one movie in 2009, it should be Food Inc
. Food Inc. lifts the veil on the agriculture and meat industries in the United States, and shows viewers how a few corporations now control them. I know Food Inc. will change lives with its simple message of self-empowerment.

"I learned everything from Bruce Lee."

Jackie Chan answers 10 questions from readers of TIME Magazine.

You, Me, and the Bourgeoisie

Here I am with all the pleasures of the first world
Laid out before me who am I to breakdown?
Everyday I wake up, I choose love
I choose light
And I try, it's too easy just to fall apart

Oh my baby don't be so distressed
We're done with politesse
It's time to be so brutally honest about
The way we know we long for something fine
When we pine for higher ceilings
And bourgeois happy feelings

And here we are in the center of the first world
Laid out before us, who are we to break down?
Everyday we wake up
We choose love
We choose light
And we try, it's too easy just to fall apart

Plastic bottles
Imported water
Cars we drive wherever we want to
Clothes we buy it's sweatshop labor
Drugs from corporate enablers
We're not living the good life'
Cause we're fighting the good fight
You and me just trying to get it right

Love can free us from all excess
From our deepest debts
Cause when our hearts are full we need much less
Yea I know we long for something fine
When we pine for higher ceilings
And bourgeois happy feelings

Everyday we wake up
We choose love
We choose light
And we try, it's too easy just to fall apart

It's Friday!

This is the cupcake I'm recreating in Photoshop class. Mmmm!

Ferris Bueller's grudge

If Ferris Bueller's Day Off was a horror movie, rather than a comedy...

Hot diggity dog

Room Candy Blog, one of Ajumma's new faves!

Inflatable gorilla=immense happiness

I've driven by the giant inflatable gorilla atop the car dealership in Garden Grove for years. Despite my longing, I've never had a reason to rent one of these bohemiths until now; Ajumma's hosting a baby shower this summer! This will look great on top of my house with a banner that reads, "Congrats! You procreated."

Jennies Coconut Macaroons

The next time you're at the grocery store, look for Jennies Coconut Macaroons in your health food aisle.  I had an out of body experience when I saw the can.

Jennies new macaroon packaging which is not sold at my store.  No easy open tab, but even worse is NO ARNOLD!

Clones Vol. 14: Jenny Shimizu and Russell Wong

Now that model Jenny Shimizu has hair, she reminds me of a pretty version of actor Russell Wong.

Russell in his Joy Luck Club days

Jenny, now

A Whiter Shade of Pale

All the talk is about Jake Shimabukuro these days. After watching a few of Jake's videos I quickly realized that seeing someone get down on the ukulele is not my thing. Sungha Jung, on the other hand, I can handle.

Is that a crutch in your hand or are you just happy to see me?

Pro surfer Nathan Fletcher has a 12-inch titanium rod in his hip and leg after a busting his femur along the North Shore in January. Of his injury, Fletcher said, "Honestly, it's the best thing that ever happened to me because it made me appreciate what I have in surfing." And Ajumma says if one is spending months in recovery, Hawaii's a good place to do it.

Here we have the famous Portuguese footballer.
The metallic shorts. The diamond earring. The hairless tanned legs and blinding white shoes! Cristiano Ronaldo spent time in Los Angeles last summer recovering from an ankle surgery.

Let them eat cake (that resembles raw fish)

This cake actually is made of sushi and probably sent quite a few guests to the hospital.

The Magic and Tragic Year of My Broken Thumb

Sherman Alexie is hard at work on a sequel to his young adult novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian! The last time we saw geeky but loveable Arnold Spirit it was 2007, and he was attending a mostly white school off his reservation. In Alexie's the new book, The Magic and Tragic Year of My Broken Thumb, Arnold navigates through his 10th grade year.

Wanted: Someone who speaks Korean

If you speak fluent Korean and are willing to (anonymously) call my favorite restaurant to find out whether the new ajumma they've hired are on temporary visas and are going home soon, I'd really appreciate it. My husband is sick of his 오징어 볶음 being all messed up. This situation has me thinking about my lack of skills in Korean and how few negative things I am able to say other than, "This is not spicy squid," and "Would you please be quiet?" These two expressions would get me banned from the restaurant.

Hugh Jackman visited Seoul this week and made a public appearance with Daniel Henney. Daniel is taller than Hugh, which is surprising. But can the handsome American kick as high as the Australian powerhouse who puts even the Rockettes to shame? I think not.

Lastly, Ajumma watched First Sunday this week and it made me cry. More specifically, Tracy Morgan made me cry. I think the world is ending.

Kevin loves his dad

Very possibly better than a cupcake

Pyscho Donuts is an donut shop in Campbell, California that puts Rice Crispies, Count Chocula and graham crackers on donuts. Going with the pyscho theme, they've got a booth where customers can be photographed wearing a real straitjacket. (This is much to the displeasure of Psycho Donut's local mental health advocates.) Ajumma thinks gourmet donuts may be the next big thing. See Psycho Donuts specialities, here.

Koreans go mini in the market

JooAng Daily says Korean companies are selling food in smaller food portions to appeal to single customers. Read more here.

Asians shouldn't be allowed near animals. Period.

Korean bullfighting in The New York Times. The level to which people suck is astounding.

Happy Monday

Interviewers ask Daniel Henney the same boring questions over and over. Here's what people really want to know:

1. What kind of projects are in the works for you?
2. Are you planning on leaving Asia to work soley in the US?
3. What is your favorite Korean dish?
4. Do you feel that you paved the way for Dennis O'Neil?
5. What was it like to work alongside Hugh "High Kicks" Jackman on X-Men Origins: Wolverine?
6. As a child of an adoptee and in your roles in My Name is Kim Sam Soon and Father you brought exposure of adoption to mainstream Korea. Do you think adoption is viewed differently in Korea now, versus when you first arrived in the country? How do you think Korea might progress towards more internal adoptions?

Andre Kim and Valentino

Which is creepier? Andre Kim's white space suit and sprayed-on hair, or Valentino's sprayed-on orange face?
